Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum (JPPM) is located on the site of the Battles of St. Leonard Creek, which is the largest naval engagement in the State of Maryland. During the War of 1812, the United States essentially had no organized Navy. This led to the British Navy turning the Chesapeake Bay into what many have described as a "British lake".
In June of 1814, the Chesapeake Flotilla, commanded by Commodore Joshua Barney, battled the British Navy in an attempt to end the blockade that had so greatly affected the Chesapeake region.
